another damn computer for keeps. Empty
PostSubject: another damn computer for keeps.   another damn computer for keeps. EmptyMon Oct 04, 2010 5:34 pm

This is going to be a slow and painful wait. But this computer im on is ancient, it does the job, but only just. And i know for a fact i miss the good old days of putting (even dod) on max graphics. Its a packard bell, bout 7 yrs old? got a pci-e card ati300 512mb, celeron 2.2ghz. it all flops.
Anyway, heres the system i was thinking of putting together. And some questions, its been some time since i did major lookin into computers. As well as that i'll be changing my forever love of nvidia to ati for the first time so i may need to do a lil more research. Not on a budget, but i dont want to splash out more than 650ish.

Processor: AMD Phenom x6, 9mb cache, 3.2ghz. + a custom heatsink n fan. 220

Graphics card: Either Ati hd5450 x2 or Ati hd5770 x1. or two hehe >140

1. 2x Ati hd5450 core speed 650mhz, memory 1gb 1.6ghz, 12gb/s bandwidth. whatever that is. But i would maybe have 2. if possible.
2. Ati hd5770 core speed 850mhz, memory 512mb, 1.2ghz ddr5? 76gb/s bandwidth. 140
+possibly if possible custom cooler/s.

Motherboard: Definatly an Asus. 60 - 70

RAM: ddr3 1800 4gb 70

600w psu with a case cheap hopefully >60
dvd drive 20
500gb sata 2 is just sat there waiting. My current hds moaaoaoaooaoaooaoaan
medusa headset, oh my still in love with those. I could get the mobile one with the usb, or £20 pci sound card? still researching tho.. usb thing might not be so good. 40 - 80
Finally and most crucially a wired keyboard and mouse. This wireless one has lag i swear down. Nice charged batteries too. I want to go my old routes get me a wired logitech mx518 , any keyboard with a good backlight and a nice mouse mat. probs about 80..
Ooh little over there, but needs refining, im just buying the lesser significant parts first before i get to the innards.

Questions!
It is said that the amd x6 is split into six cores, and is some areas matches the intel i5/high end i3s, true?
And the memory speed is a bit slower than the intels, will this matter too much? bottlenecking crossfire.
Something inside me says that the graphics card core speed is what counts first, memory, bandwidth, gflops, pixel fill etc all that other crap dont count for less after that. that and the speed of the mobo so dont know weather to get 2 crap ones or one or (possibly) two good ones, want 2xpci-e x16
Yet to confirm the hd5770 will allow crossfire, and the 5450 says it allows a software crossfire. What is that? I thought you physically attached the cards together.
With those am3 sockets, is there something else to that socket? e.g. 870 chipset or 890fx chipset? will the 75 quid one work ok or should i be using a different processor? http://www.ebuyer.com/product/206152, 120 for a mobo seems a bit muchhh http://www.ebuyer.com/product/206344.
The last processor i had was a 3.2gzh amd x2 64bit.

As my system grows i'll keep posting. And i hope to see yall on shitty high ping late night servers. Still slaving it. drunken
oh and i need a computer desk, i killed my old one aswell, damn i got anger management probs!! har atm i just play on my bed! lool

Well first keeps, gd to see you Smile secondly, I think you should take a look at some of these products for your comp:

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R X58 Socket 1366 DDR3 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-235-GI - £149.98
CPU: Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=701&catid=6&subid=1272&sortby=priceAsc - £234.99
GFX: Asus ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-219-AS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1515 - £125.98
Memory: Geil Black Dragon 6GB (3x2GB) 1333MHz Triple Channel http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-089-GL&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1390 - £89.99
HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB Sata II http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-082-SA&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=1279 - £48.16
PSU: CoolerMaster GX 650W http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-200-CM&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat= - £59.98
DVD: Samsung DVD+-RW http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CD-099-SA&groupid=701&catid=10&subcat= - £13.99
Headset: Speedlink Medusa NX USB Gaming Headset http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SP-033-SL&groupid=702&catid=1058&subcat=1718 - £48.99
Mouse: Logitech MX518 Gaming Mouse http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=KB-060-LG - £24.99
Keyboard: Steelseries Z board http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=KB-021-ST&groupid=702&catid=23&subcat=1258 - £35.90

Total: £832.95 Smile ..... I don't seem to have this budget thing down do I xD

In retrospect though, definitely stick with the gfx card though, cheaper than the 140 quid you were thinking on spending and a 3 year warranty on that one. About 25 quid for the mouse which isn't too bad, the keyboard is your preference, I'm sure Barcode had one once, he can tell you what they are like. Cheap DVD drive and the HDD, although more than you wanted, you'll find the extra 500GB worth it, for the price of that now, I could only get a 400GB for that price years ago.

The headset is what I could find, the non-USB version is 4 quid more, give the other headsets a look as well though, might find something better. PSU is PSU :/

Basically it's all down to the Mobo/CPU/Memory combination you want, swap them about to get down to your 650 target and you can basically have the rest Smile

P.S. Sorry for not looking at Gehns if he actually stuck to the budget ^^
P.P.S If you stump up extra cash to actually buy this, stick with the mobo, it's basically future proofing yourself with Sata 6Gbp/s connections and USB 3.0 Smile

I'm out of date on current hardware so I won't say anything about specific hardware when it comes to the main bits but theres a couple of things you might want to bear in mind from my last upgrade research.

1) More cores does not necessarily mean faster. When I was looking at upgrades a couple of years ago I looked at the comparison of the intel quad cores vs the dual cores (AMD were f**ked at the time) and found that particularly for gaming the dual cores performed better. When it came to general apps there was not much difference either. So I got a dual core E8400.

I suggest you take a look at http://www.guru3d.com and check out the reviews and comparisons of processors. They get all the new kit in and test it compared to others in a similar price range. They also test the performance against games, so you can get an idea of how well they perform.

So you may find that the latest and greatest are not that fantastic and you can spend half the money ending up with less cores but a better performance.

2) SLI/Crossfire is generally a bad idea. Again, I looked at guru3d and found that you are generally better off spending the same amount of money on a single card rather than getting a pair. They do a fair number of reviews where they SLI/crossfire a pair of cards and compare with other cards. Since they review all cards, you can get a fair idea of how well they stack up against each other. They test against a mixture games at various detail levels as well as the likes of 3dmark - so you can get a fair idea of what fps you can expect.

So have a good rummage on there and make sure you are getting good value for money. Plus if you have a single card theres less potential for problems.

3) MX518 - damn good rat. Still got mine, which was a replacement for the MX510 I killed. If mine died tomorrow I would be looking to get another.

4) Medusa - I am on my second one of these, having run over the outragously long cord once too often with the old one. I dont't have the USB one, but have the one with the extra box. This does have a significant advantage in that you can plug in an extra input (ipod, console etc) and an extra output (speakers). So its pretty handy to have that extra amp. Plus its separate from the sound card so theres less to go wrong. Most mobos come with 7.1 sound on these days and you can always add a proper sound card later for a few quid cos they are cheap.

5) Keyboard - I now use a saitek eclipse II backlit keyboard which is damn SOLID. No creaking despite 3 years of battering. As Red says I had a zboard but it broke when i moved house. So I got a ZBoard Fang instead - which is just the keypad. If you have seen a zboard merc, its the left section. A lot more comfortable than a standard keyboard with the 6 big movement buttons and 35 other keys in easy reach.

http://steelseries.com/products/keyboards/steelseries-merc-stealth

However, ZBoard got bought out by steelseries and the fang was discontinued and you probably won't find one anywhere.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Zboard-FANG-Gaming-Pad-PC/dp/B000EYBBD2

I would NOT recommend a zboard because the changable keysets lark makes it too easy for something to go wrong and you would never change the keysets anyway.

The Merc however looks like a winner, IF you have a wide enough keyboard shelf.

6) Optical Drive - if you are under budget, you might want to consider a blu-ray drive, but thats a definite optional extra.

7) Operating System - the thing you have been missing. You want Windows 7 64 Bit. Has to be 64 bit so that it will use more than 2GB of ram and Win 7 is far better than anything which has gone before. You might want to consider the Home Premium edition since it has media center built in. So If you ever want to bung in a TV card, you can use it as a PVR. My PC records Mock The Week for me when I am down the pub.

Cool Mobo - I only buy Asus so I'm with you on that one.

9) Red's right about the hard drive. Get a terabyte. For the difference in price thats a lot more storage space for porn for your money Razz

I think thats about it for now GL.

Firslty, Hi red, geng, and bc! Thanks for getting back to me, thanks for your recomendations and builds, i've be taking a closer look and has already inspired me to change a bit of my plan. I'm going to go waaaaay over budget on this one. Twisted Evil keeping it sensible though.
Thanks for that site Bc, guru3d has helped alot, dont believe i forgot that one. Helped me forget about my budget.

Heres my build: - it will change again no doubt. or not.
Processor: AMD Phenom x6 1090t 3.2Ghz 210
Motherboard: Asus M4A 88TD-V EVO/usb3 82
Graphics: PALIT GTX 460 SONIC 1GB platinum 185
RAM: Corsair 4gb (2x2gb) ddr3 1600mhz 65
PSU: Arcitc power 600w 40
Case: Something like this: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/150284 or http://www.ebuyer.com/product/150296. 20
Dvd drive 20
hd: 1tb sata 2 80
heatsink: TBA £30 tops + Arctic silver 5 compound. 35
fanns 15
£692

Glad to see someone agrees that ASUS ROCKS the socks off other mobos, reliable, feature rich, and robust with overclocking. I will dabble in that. This mobo allows the ram up to 1333mhz, and can overclock to 1600 or 2000. Its crossfire ready, so better work with my nvidia card ok.

The processor is a good one, just the i7 9--'s beating it in most.. err all tests. It can be overclocked massively (if need be) though i doubt i need to, it has features that allows it to take over the world or something. The list is endless. Beats all the i5's and most of the i7 8--'s in most tests. Even i built my ex a pc with intel in, i never used intel lol. Now is the time for amd!

I was thinking to get 1600mhz ram im not too keen on having the mobo at its limits, boo. it will o/c to 2ghz i think knowing me to get a bunch of redundancy errors, and dropped data. crashes, stalls and mismatches etc. Must be brave. 1333 is poo. my old pc was 3gb 800mhz Razz

I asked a mate at work what his card was, he said ati 5770. So because hes a retard im not getting that card. Shame really i was looking forward to it aswell. Instead i'll be getting an nvidia card, with a particular branding becuase they make it overclocked and the likes. For the money, i get more. Thanks again bc, www.guru3d.com was very useful in all aspects of putting my machine together.

I will be getting another 500gb and will be once again attempting to have them on raid. Otherwise i'll be stuck with them two. Would rather have two than one anyway. I bet those tb hds are longer to spin up and load. who knows. Maybe in the future i'll be getting a solid state drive. i got sata 6gb/s on that mobo. might help.

I wish i didn't break my old pc, could have salvaged the psu! If i didnt want a cable on it, i'd simply unplug it. I get this cheap PSU and its got loads of scraggly cables everywhere. Then from time to time im gonna be hearing tickety tick tick tick tick tick tick PWANG wawawawawawawawa when the plugs get caught in my ill mounted fans.

This budget cuts out the mouse, the mat, keyboard, and medusa. Al could add up another hundred or so. Even if i got them first i wouldn't use them till i built this, just not possible.

*reviews system*

Yes, the logitech mx518 has two fans right here on this forum. This will be my 3rd Razz Tried a couple razer mice, didnt like em much, never got used to any of them.
Also my 3rd set of medusa's. damn that EXCESSIVELY long cable that has tendencies to be ran over by my chair before i walk off with it still on my head. or trip over it. or fall asleep with it on and get all tangled up. Anyway, thats bad. But still good. Rather longer than shorter any day.
I had a saitek eclipse first one i think? i dunno, both pretty much the same. I want something exactly similar to that. I'm not a fan of 'gaming' keyboards with the rubber keys, and the odd shaped buttons, but i do like shortcut keys, and media player controls, so i'll be hunting. Was thinking logitech g15. I've just done a search of that, and one has turned up here:
http://digital-switch.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=3769&currency=gbp
£16.46 new. haha that has to be a mistake im buying it NOOOOOOW. Will let you guys know whats what when it arrives!

Thanks guys! drunken

What a Face What a Face What a Face What a Face What a Face What a Face What a Face
EDIT: Bollocks i do need windows 7. Says under £100, but i can only put it on one machine. So when i format it wont work. I am not paying for that.
EDIT2: On second thoughts this looks like a scam. boo. £11 for a 10gb ipod? Do they exist?? £64 for a 32" panasonic. whatever. not ordering.

Its a self-build so you can get an oem version of Windows (system builders). Check ebay for oem. No probs when u change components. They will also send u a crap cable or something to conform with the rules.

I also go for antec cases and seasonic m series modular PSUs for reliability, build quality and ease of assemblage.

I will admit keeps that I too would probably end up going for the Asus board in the end but after reading Custom PC magazine for the last half year, I do tend to be swayed by their reviews for certain things (mainly the gigabyte UD X58 chipset boards).

Good thing that you're trying to stick to the budget though unlike me ^^

The AMD processors do overclock well so a good AMD+mobo combo will work nicely I think, also will save you a bit of cash for other things like peripherals, speaking of which, I did have the original Saitek Eclipse keyboard but I had to ditch that due to a hardware problem where the dash (-) key would just press randomly, had to tell someone on another forum when they had that problem to ditch the board, not fixable Sad

Currently got the Eclipse 2 board which (as BC will tell you) is a brilliant keyboard, 3 backlit colours and sturdy enough to put up with our kind of relentless onslaughts :p they are hard to get a hold of now, you'll either get an eclipse 3 now or have to get the cyborg model :/

Apparently the 4 core AMD is a lot better for gaming than the 6 core
